Gloss or Matte finish - Which is best?
Nowadays, most photos seem to have a gloss finish, but 25 years ago, matte seemed to be the finish that everyone had. Just because a gloss finish is the one that your photo lab offers by default, it doesn't mean that you have to have it. Most allow you to pick a matte finish if that's what you want, and will often give it to you for free or just a small charge. Getting the look you want can be more important than just getting the cheapest photo prints.
Gloss Finish
A gloss finish typically gives colours that look more vibrant and the images will be crisp and sharp. It's like a wet look for photos. the downside is that they are susceptible to fingerprints and can be awkward to look at in bright light or when the sun is out.
Matte Finish
A matte finish tends to hide fingerprints and smudges well and glare from bright lights and the sun is much lower. However, the photos can be difficult to scan or convert back into a digital image and the colours are often less vibrant. Having said that, black and white images can often look better in matte, and many images can gain a more professional look.
Summary
Some people like a matte finish, some like glossy. Although you may generally like one more than the other, always think whether a particularly special image would look better printed the other way before ordering online photo prints.
